Questions to ask your agent

Is my personal property insured with replacement cost coverage?

Replacement cost coverage means you’ll be paid the full amount it costs to replace your personal property, such as furniture, clothes, & decor. Without replacement cost, you’ll receive the value of your depreciated assets, which could be only a percentage of what they cost to replace.

What is my deductible?

The deductible is the amount you agree to pay before your insurance coverage kicks in. While deductibles are often a flat amount, like $1,000, they can be a percentage of your home value, like 1% or 5%. There can also be a separate deductible for wind or hail claims. Make sure you know what your deductible is and that you’re comfortable with the amount you’d need to pay before making a claim.

Do I have coverage for a sewer backup?

Water / sewer backup is an optional coverage that can be added to your policy. If you have a finished basement, you should consider this coverage.

Is my policy basic, broad, or special form?

The basic policy form provides coverage for a list of specific causes, like fire, lightning, windstorm, smoke, and more.

The broad policy form expands the basic form to include coverage for more causes of loss, including weight of snow, leakage from appliances, collapse, and a few more.

Special coverage is the most broad form and provides coverage for all causes of loss except a list of special exceptions, which includes things like war, nuclear hazards, earth movement, and a few others.
